13 November 2002 — We would like give some exposure to elements of the Mac filmmaker community, particularly local elements. (Most of these groups' events will be posted to the MacFilmmakers' webcalendar/iCAL.)

Name: MacFilmmakers

Description: We are a user group located in Silicon Valley. Our mission is to help filmmakers of all levels develop high quality content using a Macintosh-based workflow. While a primary focus is on editing with Final Cut Pro, MacFilmmakers will also look at the entire production cycle from project development through distribution. History: Founded in January 2002, we had our inaugural meeting in March 2002 on the Apple campus.

Membership: Currently open, there are no membership fees as yet.

Name: SFCutters.org

Description: This user group is a Final Cut Pro-centered user group, and just recently celebrated its two-year aniversary. They were the world's first FCP users group! (Check the MacFilmmaker webcalendar for dates.)

History: Founded in March 2000, they just recently celebrated its two-year aniversary.

Membership: Currently open, there are no membership fees as yet.

Name: BAMG

Leaders: Jim Tierney

Description: This user group is primarily visual effects, and has had great presentations for Adobe After Effects, plugins, and 3D and compositing software. They meet at the Graphic Arts institute each month, usually a Monday. (Check the MacFilmmaker webcalendar for dates.)

Name: IMAGE

Leaders: Alec Proudfoot

Description: IMAGE is a community of Film/Video/Multimedia Makers. Who would have thought that there was a community of filmmakers in the San Francisco Peninsula and South Bay? Believe it or not, there are thousands of independent filmmakers working here, producing everything from feature films to cable access programming.

History: .The Independent Media Artists Group, IMAGE, was formed in October 1993 to bring together local film/video/digital media makers. In our 9 years of existence, IMAGE has grown by leaps and bounds, with over 1,500 people in our database.

Membership: Currently open, there are membership fees.

  • A weekly on-line bulletin, OUTTAKES, that currently reaches over 750 people,
    listing upcoming meetings, events, casting calls, production opportunities, etc.
  • Staged readings of screenplays written by Bay Area writers
  • Monthly meetings and networking opportunities, with guest speakers such as
    screenwriters David and Janet Peoples (12 Monkeys and Unforgiven), editor Robert Dalva (Jumanji and Black Stallion), and visual effects producer Camille Cellucci (TITANIC).
  • Skills workshops (screenwriting, production, fundraising, acting, etc.)
  • Screening opportunities for local filmmakers, for both finished pieces and
    works-in-progress
  • A screenwriting group

Name: Film Arts Foundation

Description: The Film Arts Foundation is a nonprofit leader in the media arts field, providing comprehensive training, equipment, information, consultations, and exhibition opportunities to independent filmmakers.

History: Film Arts Foundation has been in existence 25 years.

Membership: Open. Membership Fees $45 / $65

Name: Viewfinders Camcorder Club of Cupertino

Leaders: Frank Swanson

Description: VCC is a non-profit educational organization devoted to promoting the art and craft of non-commercial movie/video making. They meet monthly on the 3rd Tuesday of every month (except December) at Cupertino's Quinlan Community Center from 7 – 9pm. Their website has a more information including their monthly newsletter.

History: VCC was founded in 1996 as an outgrowth of a camcorder class given in Cupertino.

Membership: Yearly Membership Dues: $25.

  • Monthly meetings with programs that include guest speakers, product demonstrations and viewing/critiquing member videos

Name: CinemaChicks.org

Description: Cinema Chicks is a group where Bay Area women in film can connect, collaborate and be inspired. They meet on the 2nd Wednesday of the month for an evening of Show & Tell, Tips & Tricks, guest speakers and whatever else they can fit into 2 hours. (Check the MacFilmmaker webcalendar for dates.) Meetings usually start at 7:30 pm.

History: Founded in February 2001, they have over 90 members from all walks of film.

Membership: Open to women only, there are no membership fees as yet, but a $2 donation is requested at meetings.

Name: DVD Studio Pro User Group

Description: DVD Studio Pro was founded to create a place to exchange ideas and to go for information and suggestions. DVDSP doesn't have too many support
pages on the Web, and we hope to set up some sort of discussion area to get help you when you get stuck. (Check the MacFilmmaker webcalendar for dates.)

Name: After Effects User Group (AEUG)

Description: The After Effects User Group presents "mini-classes" and discussions dedicated to After Effects and related plug-ins, including new tools, production techniques, and utilizing everything After Effects has to offer: Film Production to Flash output…. Name: Power OS X User Group (POSXUG)

Description: The Power OS X User Group is dedicated to learning the details of both the OS X operating system utlities and the underlying UNIX (FreeBSD) operating system, which includes the UNIX shell, file systems, security, and networking. UNIX is a key component of the systems deployed at the top film and special effects houses in the world, and its penetration in the motion graphic industry is expected to grow strongly. Description: The focus of this group will be to explore realtime, interactive, involving interfaces and content expressed in three dimensions — the kind that offer people the one media experience that can't get from television, film, or print. (Check the MacFilmmaker webcalendar for dates.)

Name: Pixel Corps

Leaders: Alex Lindsay

Description: Our training is part internship, part user group, part think tank … all hands-on and all project-oriented. No previous experience in computer graphics is necessary to enter the program. Previous graphics experience (3D, 2D, Video) may allow you to accelerate some training. Pixel Corps training is team oriented, so if you don't like working with others, please do not apply.

Applications covered include : Photoshop, After Effects, Electric Image, Form-Z, Maya, Final Cut Pro, REAL VIZ, and more. Techniques covered include: Unix Shell Scripting, Production Management, Photoshop, Video Compositing and Editing, 3D, and Photogrammetry. The intention is to train the next generation of Media Developers … familiar with everything from Broadband Content Creation to Digital Film Production. We intend to bring the opportunity to everyone regardless of economic background or location. If you participate … you will be part of an experiment that may have a global impact. History: Incubated over the past 2 years, the Pixel Corps is beginning an expansion phase.

Membership: Opens periodically; orientation is free.To join the Pixel Corps after orientation: $50 registration, $25 per month til year's end.
