MEETING ONE RECAP — March 2002

Our First Meeting Was Standing Room Only!

28 March 2002 Our first meeting was held on March 20th, 2002, on the Apple campus. We were very fortunate to have a standing room only crowd (150+) at our inaugural event — and great speakers! (Please note: we are not affiliated with Apple. They were gracious enough to let us use their auditorium to hold our meeting. And they make great computers. :-) NEW — the first member photos are up! [700 k+]) Mac Filmmakers was also fortunate to have at our very first meeting R/COM Networks onsite to tape Apple's very own Joseph Linaschke going over features of FCP 3 and Garrett Rice going over the benefits of using Apple's new acquisition, Film Logic. Check out our Channel DV section for information on how to access their FCP demos, interviews, and even a news feature on Mac Filmmakers' first meeting!

Our Speakers

25 March 2002 Our scheduled roster of three speakers had several last-minute modifications, as Tom McDonald, the scheduled speaker from Apple, couldn’t make it. Joseph Linaschke and Garrett Rice from Apple stepped in at the last minute and gave great presentations! Joseph covered FCP 3, paying particular to two of the hottest features: OfflineRT and Color Correction. Next, Garrett brought us an exciting view of one of Apple’s latest acquisitions: Film Logic (check out his film at www.thesurpriseparty.com). To accommodate the late speaker changes, our own Jerry Monti graciously offered to move his presentation on Digital Distribution to next meeting (April 17th). Our apologies for those of you who hoped to catch him speak on the 20th. Last, we had the amazing Stuart Maschwitz on The Orphanage's 'Magic Bullet' process. Rebel mac stories, cool tools, and that ‘film stuff’ — we had it all!

Support Local Groups

25 March 2002 We would like to thank the bay area mac filmmaker community for their outstanding show of support! A special thanks goes out to the leaders of other groups who managed to attend (or help us get the word out). In attendance was Kevin ‘Telly’ Monahan from SFCutters.org, Alec Proudfoot from IMAGE, and Dave Livingston from the Newly formed Stanford-based Digital Media Academy. Kevin helped us get the ball rolling by asking some of the first questions of our demo reel crew (friends will have recognized his rich bass voice!), before having to bow out. The others were introduced near the break (we were late, sorry Telly!). Not in attendance (road trip), but spreading the news was BAMG’s Jim Tierney. Thanks to Garr Reynolds, Mac User Group Guru, for helping us to navigate the straight and narrow path to success. We are thrilled to join the company of these outstanding groups and intend to work hard to make the mac filmmaker community even livelier and more diverse. Show your support and feed that ravenous need for new information and ideas by checking them out!

Sponsors

25 March 2002 Thanks to Alexa at Peachpit Press and Brandy with CMP Books for seeing that we had cool DV books to raffle off. Thanks to Design Tools Monthly for coming up with 100 free sample issues to their awesome newsletter. And thanks to our own Kevin Johnson for covering the costs of feeding our ravenous tech hordes! Businesses or individuals should contact us if they would like to help underwrite future goodies (food or giveaways).

Pictures

28 March 2002 The good news is we will have pictures from our video taping to post shortly from the first meeting. However gremlins (and lack of bodies to run sound checks) cost us our sound. :-{ Please contact us if you have any decent audio recordings (partial is OK!) from that event. NEW — the first member photos are up! [700 k+])

Volunteers

25 March 2002 We were extremely grateful for all those who answered our call for bodies! The four of us—Kevin Johnson, Alutha Jamancar, Jerry Monti, and Fred Balin—have been shepherding this thru the early phases. And there is a lot to be done to put these gigs together. We are dusting ourselves off right now, and in about a week should have a volunteer wishlist firmed up. You can find a first start on our volunteers page. (Yes, cameraman is one!)

Names

25 March 2002 We would like to put up some info on the folks who showed demo reels; please contact us (you know who you are.) Likewise, we would like to acknowledge the volunteers who stepped forward by name. We didn’t … err … have a volunteer to gather that info.

What's Next?

25 March 2002 We will place info on the next meeting, scheduled for April 17th, on our main meetings page as we get them. Drop us a note at pixelcrew@macfilmmakers.com with your preferred e-mail address if you'd like to be kept in the loop. Or if you attended the first meeting and have feedback, let us know!

Thanks again from The Core Team
